The Czech language belongs to the West-Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family. The language is closely related with Slovak, Kashubian, Sorbian and Polish.
Czech is spoken as a mother tongue by circa 12 million people. 10 million of them live in the Czech Republic. There are Czech minorities in Slovakia, Pland, Austria, Croatia, in Ukraine and in the Banat region. The Czech minority in the region of Banat is an ethnic minority who live in Romania and Serbia.
