Language

Welsh (Cymraeg)

Description

Welsh is a Celtic language and forms together with Breton and Cornish the Brythonic group of the Celtic languages from the Indo-European language family.

In Wales, Welsh is spoken by approximately 550,000 people. That makes it the Celtic language that has the largest number of mother tongue speakers. In Wales the language is an official and school language, next to English. There are two main dialects, a northern and a southern.

Contrary to Breton, the Welsh language is still very vibrant, because it is still learnt as a mother tongue by many children and is much spoken in all walks of life. In some parts of the country, especially in the north, Welsh-speakers form the majority, with percentages of up to 70%. Although the number of speakers has been constant over the past decade, Welsh is considered as endangered according to UNESCO.
