The German minority of Romania consists of different groups of settlers: Transylvanian Saxons, Banat Swabians, Satu Mare Swabians, Banat Mountain Germans, Spis/Zips Germans, Transylvanian Landler, Dobruja Germans and Bukovina Germans. At the census of 2011 about 36,000 people indicated that they belong to the German minority.
The German language is taught as mother tongue at the state schools (including school leaving examination in German); furthermore there are several university departments around the country that offer studies in German. The German classes and departments are also popular among the majority population.
One part of the Germans in Romania is protestant (Transylvania), and another part is catholic (Banat and Satu Mare county).
