According to the numbers from the Ukrainian census of 2001 there are approximately 33,000 Germans in Ukraine. But the representatives of the German civic organisations in Ukraine doubt if these numbers are correct. They do so, because many ethnic Germans tried to hide their ancestry, even after the fall of the Soviet Union. For many of them the memories of those times are still strong and people still think about the despicable word “fascists”, as they were called.
